How the real test works

7 minutes total, one examiner, pass/fail. Three phases — Sameer runs them in order with Amreen, exactly like the Trinity examiner will.

Phase 1 · ~2 min

Conversation

Examiner asks simple questions about everyday life — family, home, work, food, hobbies, weather. Short answers are fine, but full sentences are better.

Amreen must show:

  • Understands everyday questions
  • Answers in present simple + present continuous
  • Can talk about the past (past simple: was, went, had)
  • Answers without long pauses
Phase 2 · ~3 min

Topic

Amreen brings a topic she has prepared (we suggest My Family or My Home). She talks about it for about 90 seconds, then the examiner asks follow-up questions.

Amreen must show:

  • Talks for ~90 seconds without prompting
  • Uses a few past-tense sentences (when she married, when children were born)
  • Uses comparatives (bigger, older, younger)
  • Answers follow-ups on the topic

Interactive

A short role-play. The examiner sets a scene (buying something, ordering food, asking for directions). Amreen must ask questions and respond.

Amreen must show:

  • Asks questions (How much is…? Where is…? Can I…?)
  • Responds to the examiner's answers
  • Keeps the conversation going
  • Uses please / thank you / excuse me
A2 Level

What's needed to PASS

  • Grammar: present simple, present continuous, past simple, can/can't, going to
  • Comparatives & superlatives (bigger, the best)
  • Prepositions of place & time (in, on, at)
  • Enough vocabulary to talk about daily life
  • Clear enough pronunciation to be understood
  • It's not about perfect grammar — it's about being understood and keeping the conversation flowing
💡 How to practise: Run the phases in order with the timer. Sameer — click questions to reveal hints/follow-ups. Speak slowly and clearly, exactly like a real examiner. If Amreen is stuck, rephrase the question, don't give the answer. Praise after each phase — the real test is friendly, not intimidating.

Suggested topic for Amreen

For the real test, Amreen should prepare one topic. We suggest My Family — she knows it best, it's safe, and the examiner will ask easy follow-ups. In the real test she can bring one photo (e.g. of the children) to talk about. Practise the topic phase with her until she can speak for 90 seconds without stopping.

Her 90-second plan (My Family):

  • My name is Amreen. I am 2X years old and I live in Shipley with my husband Sameer.
  • I have two sons — Saheer is four and Saarim is three. They were born in Bradford.
  • My husband works… he is a director of his own company. (simple words!)
  • We live with my husband's parents. My father-in-law's name is Saleem, my mother-in-law is Miriam.
  • On the weekend we go to the park or visit my husband's brother in Bradford.

Exam-day tips for Amreen

  • Arrive 30 minutes early at the centre — bring her passport/BRP/eVisa share code.
  • Take a breath before answering. It's OK to say "Sorry, can you say that again?"
  • Answer in full sentences — not just "Yes" or "No".
  • If she doesn't know a word, describe it: "It's like a… for cooking" — better than silence.
  • The examiner is friendly and wants her to pass. It's a conversation, not an interview.
  • Speak clearly and a little slowly. Louder than feels natural.
